The Giovanni Consort, conducted by Kris Bowtell

Unlike political history, American choral music did not immediately burst forth with significant people and events. Choral music certainly existed in America since the Colonial Period, but it was not until the twentieth century that its impact was significant. The last half of the twentieth century saw an explosion of interest in choral music unprecedented in the history of the country.

Bookending our performance with the works of Charles Ives, The Giovanni Consort will present an overview of music written by notable American composers, some of whom are still living today. Works by Libby Larsen, David Lang, Steve Reich and Eric Whitacre will share the stage with music by Leonard Bernstein and Elliott Carter, as members of The Giovanni Consort shine a light on the diverse compositional styles that are shaping the modern repertoire for many choirs around the world.

This concert will be held in the majestic acoustics of Wesley Uniting Church Perth, where Kris Bowtell will conduct. The Giovanni Consort will also perform alongside percussion and organ for both Ives’ Psalm 90, and Bernstein’s Missa Brevis.

We hope to see you at this performance as we celebrate the impact that American composers have had on choral music over the last century.
