OperaBox and Love Opera! present Engelbert Humperdinck’s fairy tale opera Hänsel & Gretel in a fully staged production complete with principal cast, ballet, children’s chorus and orchestra. Hänsel & Gretel will be at a venue near you with the season opening on Tuesday 27th May at the Perth Town Hall, Thursday 29th May at Victoria Hall Fremantle and closing at Darlington Hall on public holiday Monday 2nd June.

Worlds collide as this classic tale gets a humorous modern revamp. Inspired by the Brothers Grimm fairy-tale of the same name, Humperdinck’s Hänsel & Gretel is the perfect introduction to opera for young viewers. Be thrilled and inspired by fairies, the famous Gingerbread Witch, and a ballet of angels, in this story of courage and hope against the odds. This is Hänsel & Gretel like you’ve never seen it before.

Humperdinck’s luscious score will be brought to life by musical director and conductor Christopher Dragon, Assistant Conductor of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra and one of Australia’s most exciting young conductors. Director Sarah McKellar said “Hansel and Gretel is an incredible opera that has everything: the music, characters and story are just so enchanting and fun. It’s perfect for younger viewers or audiences who are new to opera, because the story is so well-known, it’s very easy to follow.” Fresh from directing Fringe World 2014 hit ‘R&J’ (Shakespeare with puppets), Sarah has a talent for revamping classics in the theatre and brings this to her opera direction debut.

With principal roles sung by some of Perth’s finest singers, some of whom also sing with the West Australian Opera Chorus, and featuring our own 30-piece orchestra alongside our first ever ballet and children’s chorus, Hänsel & Gretel is a performance not to be missed!
